First Hopewell Event Hall Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Event Date: February 12,2023 10:30am-11:30am
Venue: First Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church
With the opening of the First Hopewell Event Hall, the church seeks to help renew the spirit of community and to carry forward the work of Africatown descendants. The First Hopewell Baptist Church historically played a significant role in Africatown. In 1915, after the community fire, the church donated Mobile County Training School with the original Africatown Bell, allegedly from the Clotilda, the last ship to bring enslaved Africans to the United States. The Ribbon Cutting will be marked with the ringing of a replica of the Bell to signify unity and celebrate the strength and significance of Africatown. The documentary DESCENDANT touched on the importance of the legacies of the Africatown descendants.
