- Arts Alive!
Arts Alive! Mobile’s downtown Arts Festival continued to make “art happen” once again this Spring. On April 17, 18, and 19, the festival offerd three days of varied artistic experiences and interactive and hands-on activities.
The hallmark of Arts Alive! since inception has been it’s multi-dimensional arts platform. Each festival showcases a wide selection of art genres – theater, film, visual, music, dance – all featuring local and regional talent.
Festival Chair, David Calametti explains: “Our overall goal is create personal artistic experiences for everyone who comes out. We want to de-mystify art and stir the muse within each of us.”
Arts Alive! takes place in the Cathedral Square Arts District in downtown Mobile. Festival hours are Friday, 5-9pm; Saturday 2-9pm and Sunday Noon-6pm. Admission is free for the entire festival.
- BayFest
BayFest will celebrate its 15th anniversary on October 2-4, 2009 with an anticipated 200,000 guests who will make merry on the streets of downtown Mobile, Alabama for three days and nights to the strains of over 125 live musical acts.
- Chili Cook-off
Annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society held in February or March each year in Bienville Square.
- Gulf Coast Ethnic and Heritage Jazz Festival
Every August Downtown Mobile is filled with the sounds of Jazz as the Gulf Coast Ethnic and Heritage Jazz Festival hits the stage. This four day event is designed to further the preservation and growth of jazz by presenting jazz music in a professional, entertaining, family oriented venue and by encouraging young musicians to play jazz by educating and involving them in its history and future.
- International Festival
Annual festival celebrating the many cultures and nationalities of Mobile is held in November.
- Mardi Gras
While other cities have more well known Mardi Gras celebrations, Mobile is in fact the birthplace of Mardi Gras in North America. Every year, for the two weeks before Lent, thousands of visitors fill the streets to watch dozens of parades, catch beads and moon pies, and yell, “Throw me something, mister!”
- Market in the Square
Each spring and fall local farmers bring their bounty to Cathedral Square on Saturday mornings to sell the freshest local produce available.
- Mobile Christmas and Holiday Parade
The streets of downtown Mobile begin to look a lot like Christmas on the third Saturday of December when the annual Christmas and Holiday Parade rolls through town. Floats and giant helium-filled character balloons reflect the joy and wonder of the season.
- Shrimp Cook-off
Annual fundraiser for Volunteer Mobile held in April in Bienville Square.
