Our Story

Creating A Vision for Downtown

For more than three decades, Main Street Mobile has championed the revitalization of Downtown Mobile, preserving the character of the city center while encouraging thoughtful development and new investment.

Today, Main Street Mobile continues that work under the Downtown Mobile Alliance through programs that encourage reinvestment, recognize progress and strengthen downtown for what comes next.

Since the Early 1990s

Building on a Strong Foundation

Main Street Mobile began as a City of Mobile initiative focused on improving downtown streets, sidewalks and public spaces. That early work helped build momentum for downtown revitalization and ultimately contributed to the creation of the Downtown Mobile Business Improvement District and Downtown Mobile District Management Corporation.

Downtown Inspiration Award

Recognizes an entity or individual who has taken a leadership role in transformational initiatives.

Adaptive Reuse Award

Recognizes excellence in the renovation of a vacant or underutilized building.

Excellence in Facade Improvement Award

Recognizes renovated building frontages that enhance the streetscape.

Excellence in the Public Realm Award

Recognizes transformational improvements in our streets, sidewalks, or parks: changes that delight pedestrians, increase their safety, and add to our economic vitality.

Excellence in new Construction or Infill Award

Recognizes projects that are helping to knit back the fabric of our city center by putting new buildings on vacant lots.

Engaging Third Places Award

Celebrates those spots that are not home and not work; those places that are so welcoming that people gather for a sense of community.

Excellence in Architecture and Design Award

Recognizes work that enhances the public realm through thoughtful, pedestrian-centered design, or creates an interior that results in an inviting workplace or retail space.

The Bienville Award

Named for the heart of downtown, recognizes an individual or entity whose efforts have improved the lives of people in Downtown Mobile.

Investing in Good Ideas

Downtown Strong Grants help property owners and businesses make improvements that strengthen individual properties while contributing to the continued revitalization of Downtown Mobile.

Through Main Street Mobile, eligible applicants can access financial assistance for façade improvements, signage and air purification projects.

Facade Improvement Grants

Supporting exterior improvements that enhance downtown buildings and contribute to a stronger, more inviting streetscape.
